Ci chłopcy mają gorącą krew. W rozmaitych pozach obsiadają krzesła i ławki. Drzemią, rozmawiają, niektórzy pogrążeni są we własnych myślach. Elegancki major wychodzi na podniesienie ze spisem załóg w ręku.
Czyta tylko nazwiska dowódców, każdy z nich odpowiada za swoją załogę. Są wszyscy. Major podchodzi do ściany i odsuwa zasłonę z wielkiej mapy. Przypięta jest do niej długa, czarna wstęga. Wszyscy pochylają się w krzesłach i śledzą jej wschodni koniec.
- Schweinfurt – wyjaśnia major i porządkuje papiery na pulpicie.
- Tak chłopcy, wiem o czym myślicie, to ciężkie zadanie. Pamiętacie jak poprzednim razem straciliśmy nad tym miastem trzydzieści sześć maszyn. Musimy tam jednak wrócić. Zadaliśmy Niemcom ciężkie straty, ale ich fabryki jeszcze pracują. Zakłady łożysk kulkowych to poważny cel strategiczny.
