Osiąga długość ciała do 13 cm, ogona 5 cm. Ubarwienie sierści brunatnoszare, spód ciała biały. Tryb życia nocny. Żyje w wykopanych przez siebie norach, w zaroślach buduje gniazda. W latach masowych pojawów nornik bury wyrządza znaczne szkody na polach uprawnych.
