Archaeology
English term or phrase: slab & counter slab
The rock in this region of China is made up of hundreds of layers of tightly compressed sediment. As it’s dug up, it splits apart. When this happens, fossils trapped in the sediment can split down the middle. Some bones sticking to one side of the fracture, some to the other. Some even split in half attaching to both sides of the fracture. The two pieces are known as the slab and the counter slab of the fossil.
