Constant Air Volume (CAV) terminals
Typically this application is used in zones of commercial buildings that have little variability in the latent load, but require cooling year round. Applications include most standard offices, classrooms, and other similar areas where the humidity control is generally not applied.
The application assumes that the ventilation air is pre-conditioned and de-humidified by the primary air handling systems for the building. The ventilation air supply is sized to handle the maximum ôlatentö load or code specified minimum ventilation of a controlled zone, whichever is greater. Typically, a fresh air rate of approximately 2 Air changes per hour is sufficient for most zones. The application is intended for use with VAV and CAV type air handling. Mechanically regulated, pressure independent CAV terminals such as the Barcol-Air "NR" series are recommended for this application. In smaller applications where variable duct pressure extremes are not expected to be encounter, the designer can simply install proper diffusers and apply air balancing techniques if desired.

In the general case, the REDEC® chilled ceiling provides the variable cooling capacity necessary to meet the changing sensible load requirement of the space. In all cases, the coupling of the REDEC® chilled ceiling with a constant fresh air source is required to provide proper ventilation and temperature control. The fresh air ventilation system provides two functions. The first function is the proper ventilation of the space to remove airborne contaminants, odors, and organisms. The second function is the heating, cooling, and dehumidification energy provided by the pre-conditioned air to the space. The amount of cooling or heating provided and its impact on the selection and sizing of the REDEC® system is described in Application 5.3-1.
