Ze względu na różnice akustyczne, fonetyczne i funkcjonalne głoski dzielą się na spółgłoski i samogłoski. Samogłoski są czystymi tonami, podczas gdy spółgłoski zawierają też element szmerowy. Ponadto samogłoski mają zdolność tworzenia sylab.
