Właściwie tłumaczę z j. francuskiego, w którym szkoły prywatne (1) są zestawione z "public schools" (2)

"Seul les les écoles privées (1) et les public schools (2) qui préparent leurs élèves à entrer dans des universités réputées, comme Cambridge ou Oxford, continuent de pousser leurs élèves à apprendre une langue étrangère."

Obie są szkołami prywatnymi.
Ale jakie są w praktyce różnice między tymi dwoma szkołami i jak odróżnić je w języku polskim?

Tak należy rozumieć 'private school', która jest 'public school':
"Private schools generally prefer to be called independent schools, because of their freedom to operate outside of government and local government control, but are also referred to as public schools. The reason is historical as a 'public school' was open to entrants from anywhere, and not merely to those from a certain locality, which was more usual with other schools, often charitable foundations for the benefit of a particular area."

Początkowo miałem dać odpowiedź: 'prywatna szkoła otwarta' jako tłumaczenie 'public school' (zgodnie z objaśnieniem). Później jednak (niepotrzebnie) dostosowałem odpowiedź do pytania (dodając nieszczęsne 'zamknięta vs.'), które to pytanie IMO powinno mieć postać 'public school (UK)'. Stąd zamieszanie.

Może w ten sposób :-)

State schools - funded by the UK government from taxes and therefore non-fee-paying. (US equivalent is public schools)
Private schools - privately run and funded by fees from parents.
Public school - basically the same as private but are members of the Headmasters and Headmistresses Conference, a 'common interest' body. Most of the well-known independent schools are members of the HMC (e.g. Eton etc)
