"I had a strap placed round my middle to monitor my contrac¬tions. Without consulting me the nameless doctor placed a wire up my vagina to monitor the fetal heart. I meekly protest¬ed, to which he replied 'Why not?' I felt assaulted and under¬mined by his attitude as more wire straps and belts were placed around me, inside me and next to me, thus immobilising me to the bed. I lapsed further into deferential. My labour was to be artificially controlled throughout and I felt powerless to protest."

"deferential" rozumiałabym w tym kontekście jako "pełen pokory, uniżony" (za PWN) i w moim odczuciu "I lapsed further into deferential" dotyczy raczej uczuć pacjentki niż - jak zaproponował Stanisław - działań personelu, dlatego zdanie to tłumaczyłambym raczej z perspektywy pacjentki.
Mimo początkowego oporu kobieta zdaje się w pewnym momencie poddawać sytuacji. Następne zdanie (... and I felt powerless to protest) zdaje się to potwierdzać.
