Działał w każdej ziemi i województwie. Objeżdżał on województwo i odbywał sesje w poszczególnych powiatach. Określone terminy, w których sądził sąd ziemski, nazywano roczkami. Przywileje nieszawskie stanowiły, że w każdym powiecie mają się odbywać 4 sesje rocznie.

Sama nazwa „sąd ziemski” pochodzi jednak od ziemi jako nazwy okręgu samorządowego, a nie własności ziemskiej. (...) Sąd ziemski nie miał stałej siedziby, archiwum czy więzienia. Sędziowie wykonywali swe obowiązki, objeżdżając swój okręg sądowniczy (ziemię) w czasie tzw. roczków ziemskich.
