W sensie takim, jak w Cambridge International Dictionary: "Some types of work which need special training and skill, such as being a doctor or lawyer, but not work in business or industry, are sometimes called *the professions*."
Kontekst:

The problem with the term PROFESSION is that in English it means (Collins Dictionary):

an occupation requiring special training in the liberal arts or sciences, esp. one of the three learned professions, law, theology, or medicine.

Therefore, the factor of high skill and training is "built-in". So it excludes for example manual labour.

Polish dictionaries give direct equivalent ZAWÓD. However, it is not precisely correct, as for example PORTER is not a profession.

From the context given, I reckon that the right expression to use here would be: ZAWODY WYSOKOKWALIFIKOWANE

Po dlugim (jak widac :-)) namysle zdecydowalam sie napisac "prestizowe zawody". "Wolne zawody" to na pewno poprawny ekwiwalent, ale zalezy mi raczej na podkresleniu koniecznosci posiadania kwalifikacji i wiazacego sie z danym zawodem prestizu.

You probably have in mind whe professions/crafts/occupations that we call "free profesions" in Polish. These are what you mentioned, lawyers, physicians, also architects, etc.
Namely skilled people who do not need to work for any "steady" employer but are free to take any coming job order - to defend, cure someone or build him a cathedral:).
But I may be wrong and you mean any jobs that were considered "manly" in the past, such as airline pilot.
In this case we use (discussing equal opportunity questions) Polish term for "job" meaning for example not only airline pilot but chief of airline pilots. And here the more wide description would be "zawód" (profession), or "stanowisko" (chief of pilots).

Otóż nie:

Termin "wolny zawód” odnosi się do ściśle określonej grupy profesji wymagających specjalnych uprawnień o charakterze korporacyjnym (zwykle przyznawanych przez stowarzyszenia zawodowe w oparciu o określone kryteria wykształcenia i umiejętności, lecz także społeczne, np. niekaralność) i nie ma związku z zatrudnieniem osób, które te kwalifikacje zdobyły, mogą np. pracować na posadzie (radca prawny, lekarz w przychodni kasy chorych), albo hodować pasikoniki. Tradycyjnie termin obejmował adwokatów, lekarzy, architektów i inżynierów-konstruktorów (ale nie mechaników!), a także nieformalnie tzw. twórców czyli członków byłych "stowarzszeń twórczych", jak Związek Literatów itd. Termin jest w znacznej mierze pochlebiający w użyciu potocznym, a sensu ścisłego może nabrać w ustawie, np. podatkowej, o spółkach itp.

W USA slowo professions odnosi sie do zawodow takich jak np. lekarz, inzynier, architekt itd. czyli do zawodow po "studiach". Natomiast w pytaniu np. What is your profession? czyli "Jaki jest twoj zawod?" mozna prawidlowo odpowiedziec, ze jest to np. fryzjer. Te zawody "nie po studiach" nazywane sa "occupation".

It seems that, because these 'professions' require specialist training, you might want to build on the word 'specjalizacja' useful in this context. The sentence structure would have to be adjusted, though!
