I don't think I am allowed to share entire paragraphs, nevertheless, it is a desription of a 17th century 6-storey tenement. On the ground floor there was the Cloth Booth, which was run by a merchant who lived in this building - The Cloth Booth we are talking about. This text goes to a museum in Scotland for Polish visitors.

Could you please give the previous paragraph as well? Also, Could you describe what sort of a book this is, the situation, who the speaker is, has he visited the booth in the past or is it his first visit?

there is no further context, this is a separate paragraph. Earlier paragraphs describe goods sold in the booth etc

The Cloth Booth would have been quite dark inside, as the only means of light was from cruisie lamps. These burnt fish oil - imagine the smell!
