As an RM strategy, the panel recommended the adoption of an ***on-farm refuge*** to be used in concert with Bt corn and to encourage responsible product stewardship behavior.
The refuge is intended to supply nonselected insects
to mate with those emanating from the transgenic
plants. On-farm placement will reduce the local spatial segregation between refuges and transgenic plants. The consensus among panel members was that an adaptive RM approach was most appropriate in the development of recommendations for the minimal acceptable ***on-farm refuge*** size. An adaptive approach incorporates periodic review of monitoring results, research findings, new product information,
and other data to reassess the status of refuge
recommendations, if so indicated. Thus, recommendations should be viewed as dynamic and be subject to change as available information dictates." |
