O material caído no solo florestal tem recebido várias denominações entre elas serapilheira, serrapilheira, sarrapilheira, sarapieira, manta florestal, folhedo, folhada, liteira e folhiço (KOEHLER, 1989) termos esses que equivalem ao inglês “litter”, em alemão “streu” (MELLO, 1995) e ao francês
“litière” (MELLO, 1995). Serapilheira, em latim significa sirculaiu < sirpicula, referente ao junco.
