No Brasil, durante muitas décadas, os nomes vulgares do inhame, cará e taro vem causando grande confusão. No meio rural é comum o uso da denominação cará ou inhame, ao passo que o consumidor normalmente usa o termo inhame

Nos Estados da Paraíba e Pernambuco é comum chamar inhame as espécies de Dioscorea que produzem túberas grandes (inhame da Costa, inhame São Tomé) e "cará" as espécies de Dioscorea que produzem túberas pequenas (cará Nambú). Corrêa (1969) relata que pelo nome vulgar de inhame são conhecidas várias espécies de plantas pertencentes à família das Aráceas, mas em outros países, mesmo das Américas, é empregado por diversas espécies da família das Dioscoreáceas, em lugar de cará.

Em algumas regiões do País também chamam erroneamente de inhame o rizoma das Aráceas, conhecido como Taro. Segundo Cereda (2002), no Sul do Brasil, principalmente a denominação para Dioscorea como inhame era aplicada ao gênero Colocasia, gerando confusão entre os técnicos, os produtores e mesmo em relação a consumidores. O pior é que muitas das nformações técnicas, como as estatísticas de produção e custo também foram invertidas.
