nos flancos ou valetas, mas estas são usanças de Pt. De momento não me lembra o termo usado no Br, e estou longe do dic.

Enterrarem-se ou se enterrarem em flanco / valetas.

Outra poss, de facto mais plausível: quebrarem.
... torcerem ou quebrarem nos flancos (laterais).

Talvez cave esteja aqui no sentido de colapse (entrar em colapso, quebrar).

Shoulder aqui não é barranco, antes a margem não pavimentada das rodovias.


Trata-se de o que pode acontecer a molas de feixe (elípticas).
