Antigamente as engrenagens eram cilíndricas de dentes retos e ficavam desengrenadas entre si, era necessário levá-las à mesma rotação (sincronizar) para depois "deslizar" uma das engrenagens a engatar com o seu par.
As caixas modernas têm engrenagens helicoidais permanentemente em contato, giram soltas sobre o eixo, sendo o engate feito entre eixo e engrenagem; estas são denominadas "constant-mesh gearbox". |
