Para o estudo, liderado por James Wells, investigador da divisão de biologia do centro médico do Hospital infantil de Cincinnati, EUA, os cientistas utilizaram dois tipos de células pluripotentes: as células estaminais embrionárias e as células estaminais pluripotentes “induzidas”. As células estaminais embrionárias têm capacidade para se transformarem em qualquer dos quase 200 tipos diferentes de células. Por outro lado, as células estaminais pluripotentes induzidas podem ser transformadas em células estaminais pluripontentes a partir da reprogramação de células obtidas do paciente. Estas têm a vantagem de reduzir ao mínimo o risco de rejeição celular quando se reimplantam num paciente receptor.Para transformarem as células estaminais pluripotentes no tecido intestinal os investigadores submeteram as células a uma série de manipulações utilizando químicos e factores de crescimento.
