full-blown Linux operating system with complete GNOME and KDE desktop environments perform poorly on slow CPUs and less than the recommended amount of RAM. The bells and whistles **come at the price** of processing power. Lighter-weight options do exist if you have limited resources.

George Rabel: 6:07pm Apr 30, 2007: Marcia, you had it right the first time about the "bells and whistles". The expression refers to anything that is superfluous and not absolutelty necessary. It COULD refer to multimedia capabilities, but it might be also a number of other things.
