Link Training é um procedimento de inicialização da ligação, que otimiza ou \"treina\" o circuito interno entre o hub e o nó para recepção e transmissão, e verifica a operação do link que está conectando o hub e o nó. Durante o link training, o hub e o nó trocam uma série de pacotes especiais de teste. Este procedimento provê um teste funcional do cabo para verificar se o cabo está corretamente conectado e os dados podem ser transferido com sucesso entre o hub e o nó. Link Training também permite que o hub aprenda automaticamente informações sobre o dispositivo (nó) conectado a cada porta. Pacotes recebidos pelo hub do training node contém informações tais como o tipo do dispositivo ( hub, ponte, roteador, etc), modo operacional (normal ou monitor), e o endereço de estação do dispositivo ligado àquela porta.
