English to Portuguese translations [PRO] Education / Pedagogy / Education | | English term or phrase: probation | In a university, a misbehaving student may be placed on probation.
He/she is watched carefully and may be suspended or expelled if the behaviour is repeated.
Note: I need the technical word. I've already looked in the dictionary... |

| | Período probatório | Explanation: Segundo o American Heritage:
A trial period in which a student is given time to try to redeem failing grades or bad conduct.
Para mim, nesse caso ele não foi suspenso (não pode ser observado se foi suspenso), não está em liberdade condicional (presidiário), não é estágio (transmite a idéia de trabalho temporário ou preliminar) e não está necessariamente sob vigilância de alguém.
Período probatório parece bem técnico.
As outras opções seriam "ele está em (período de) observação ou em (período de) avaliação". |

| Grading comment Hi Guys:
Yes, this was a hard one - especially since it doesn't seem to exist either in Brazil or Portugal!
Also, you're all such angels that you wouldn't have had contact with anything like this.
I almost went with "sob condição" which seems to convey the idea, but it also seems to have a specific meaning, as when the college attaches conditions to a student or group of students - such as having to finish a course in a set time. So if I used this phrase, it would mean something else to a Braziian educator.
So I decided to go with "Sob Avaliação". Several of you gave me the "sob", Silvio gave me the "avaliação" (as a third option!). If anyone has any other comment, I would be delighted to hear from you at ted10038@aol.com.
Thanks so much!!

33 mins confidence: peer agreement (net): +3 sob vigilância/situação condicional/período experimental
Explanation: à semelhança do que se passa em termos de tribunal em que o termo probation significa liberdade condicional, neste caso aplica-se relativamente ao estudante que fica em situação de vigilância ou condicional ou em período experimental, para se verificar se o comportamento foi corrigido.
