No meu contexto, faz parte do curriculo de escola primaria e secundaria.

1)Language Arts
The subjects, including reading, spelling, and composition, aimed at developing reading and writing skills, usually taught in elementary and secondary school.
2) Language Arts
Language arts refers to the class of art forms, including novels, poetry, songs and others, that focus on the creation of art works which are primarily language based. The language arts are distinguished from other classes such as performing arts, visual arts, and culinary arts. The definition is not strict, and many art forms have aspects of the language arts as well other types of art. In colleges and universities this field is often referred to as "English studies."
The six strands of the Language arts are reading, writing, viewing, representing, listening, and speaking.

Explanation: If the translation is for Brazil, this is the name used in most of our from elementary to high schools (da Escola Fundamental ao Ensino Médio). It has some subdivisions such as Reading and/or Literature (Leitura e Literatura), Composition (Redação), but the main course is LP and Lit.
By the way, I am a licensed Portuguese Language and Literature teacher.

Algumas escolas chamam a disciplina de Português, outras Língua Portuguesa, outras ainda a chamam de Língua Portuguesa e Literatura. Atualmente, a maioria das escolas oferece aulas de Redação e de Literatura separadas do ensino da língua propriamente dito.

Acredito que no meu contexto a primeira definicao seja mais adequada (percebi isso depois que coloquei a segunda, me desculpem):

Este termo tem me perturbado bastante, ao ponto que fui a livraria dar uma olhada nos livros de "language arts" para essa faixa etaria e basicamente o que vi foram exercicios de gramatica, listas de vocabulario, redacoes de um paragrafo e coisas assim.

Eu estudei na Faculdade de Letras de Lisboa (onde há cursos de Linguas...).

No Brasil, literatura estuda: textos, textos artísticos, interpretação de texto, figuras de linguagem, poesias, redação... Se fizer parte de um currículo de brasileiro, com certeza não usariamos letras no primeiro e segundo grau. Somente temos estas duas matérias: português (onde estudamos gramática portuguesa, vocabulário... e literatura que estuda o citado acima.
Já o curso de letras seria a nível universitário
