English term or phrase: moved between maths sets
"If you know your child is facing changes of any kind, whether to do with shifting allegiances within friendship groups or being moved between maths sets."

Não estou a conseguir compreender o sentido, será alguma expressão idiomática?

Obrigada.

mudando de turma baseado na abilidade
Explanation:
Setting is a system of separating pupils into groups by their ability. It is done by subject, so a pupil can be in the top set in Mathematics and in the bottom set in History. In this respect it is different from streaming which applies to all subjects. A third option is dividing the students into mixed-ability groups.

As a matter of curiosity, it is interesting to see the stance taken by different countries on this issue [reference 1]:

"In Sweden, grouping by ability is illegal; in the US there is no setting in elementary schools; in Japan pupils are seen as having equal potential; Finland is committed to mixed-ability; and Italy has no setting until aged 15. In the UK the Government has shown strong support of a Social Market Foundation statement in 2006 which called for setting in primary schools."

mudando de turma OU mudando de sala

Explanation:
Sem mais contexto, como diz que se a crianca esta' passando por mudancas que podem ser problematicas ou traumaticas, eu diria que math sets quer dizer um grupo ou turma, da qual uma saida repentina tb seria traumatizante.

agree  delveneto: "... in the US there is no setting in elementary schools". WRONG. http://mccpta.com/bulletins/MathResolution.html - Yes, I know it's the reference, not your writing :-). Anyway, although I am not certain that Math Set is this, it's what makes more sense.
