However, since you do not seem to be a repeat offender, here it goes: certainly, in the context, "she stands back" is "ela dá um passo atrás" (not "para trás") and then, always mindful of the context, "the standing back" should actually be "that standing back" so it clearly refers to the previous "she stands back". That being understood, what is being referred to is not the manner/style of said standing back, but the fact that she stood back (or rather, that she took a back stance).

Asker: Agradeço a sua sugestão e observação quanto à pergunta "dupla". A única razão de eu não ter postado duas perguntas é que eu ache desnecessário criar dois tópicos e pedir a ajuda de colegas duas vezes quando expressões sobre as quais eu tinha dúvidas eram tão parecidas e ocorrem no mesmo parágrafo no texto. Achei que seria mais fácil compreender o sentido das duas expressões lendo-as ao mesmo tempo e não em diferentes tópicos.
