He remembers that the hostilities of the first Gulf War between August 1990 and February 1991 never intimidated Charles. Typically, and with magnificent insouciance, Charles would go onto his roof at nights to watch the scuds fly over, and equally typically, he never once bemoaned his lot at drawing what to most of us looked like a decidedly short straw," he says

E, no contexto, significa simplesmente FALTA DE SORTE.

(his) lot at drawing... (a) short straw
o que o destino lhe reservou... (a) falta de sorte - ver explicação

Explanation:

Não existe a expressão "lot at drawing". LOT, você deve saber, significa SORTE/DESTINO/FORTUNA/FADO:

4. destiny: the things somebody has or experiences in life
our lot in life

Microsoft® Encarta® Reference Library 2005. © 1993-2004 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

O certo é AT DRAWING... (A) SHORT STRAW.

he never once bemoaned his lot at drawing what to most of us looked like a decidedly short straw

Example sentence(s):

saíu-lhe a fava

Explanation:
