English term or phrase: Guard Divisions
In front went punishment battalions. They were units composed of people who’d committed either political or disciplinary offences. And who were simply thrown ruthlessly at the enemy as cannon fodder, either to clear minefields or just to test the enemies fire. And then you’ve got the guard divisions behind. The Guard Divisions were mostly formations such as Western armies might just about recognise.
