Explanation:
this terminology applies only for match-play when X plays against Y.
Example: on hole 1, X needed 4 strokes but Y 5 strokes to hole the ball. That means that X is 1 up on Y. On the next hole, X needed 3 strokes and Y even 5 strokes. On this hole, X therefore is up 2 but in total is now up 3. You can also say that Y is now down 3. If both were to play the same score, the match would be EVEN. - I hope this helps. My Portuguese is not good enough to elaborate further in that language.

Laerte, cometi um engano. \'1UP\' não se traduz, mas ele não se refere ao número de tacadas e sim ao número a mais de buracos vencidos pelo jogador em questão em relação a seu adversário (ou seja, número de buracos completados com menos tacadas que o outro). Seriam dois jogadores, se um está 1UP, o outro está 1DW (1 down). Desculpe-me pela confusão.
