Sim, Marcia. Por exemplo, a IBM só usa contêiner/contêineres. Nos glossários da Microsoft, para variar, bem inconsistentes, aparece "container", contêiner (versões mais novas) e recipiente. Esse último, usado com maior frequência.

Assim, como segunda sugestão, recipiente.

Mais algumas sugestões, para tornar a sua vida mais difícil, hehehe...

Quando se fala em dados, acho que esses termos seriam adequados. Gosto de pensar também em alternativas do tipo: "os dados são ENCERRADOS num envoltório (invólucro), para transporte". Se o seu contexto permitir, você pode até alterar a idéia e dizer que os dados são "compactados" num formato para transporte (é o caso dos arquivos zip, arj, rar, CAB, 7z, etc.).
