A carried interest arrangement is an agreement in which the reporting unit pays all costs of development and operation of an oil or gas lease that are attributable to the other joint owners interest in the property. Carrying costs paid by the reporting unit on behalf of the joint owner are generally recovered through production. A loss is incurred when the joint interest owner's share of development and operating costs advanced by the reporting company are in excess of amounts recovered from the joint interest owner's share of revenue from production or a write-off of the carried interest costs occurs because the property is determined unproductive.
