If the program is long-running, it can eventually tie up large amounts of real memory and paging space
System performance gradually deteriorates; the program that finally fails due to lack of resource may not be the culprit
Memory leaks in kernel extensions that allocate pinned memory may be particularly costly
memory load control A VMM facility that detects memory over-commitment and temporarily reduces the number of running processes, thus avoiding thrashing
