A minha sugestão para Marinha:
Na primeira referência que indico aqui abaixo, é apresentada a hierarquia militar (Exército, Marinha e Aeronáutica) em várias línguas, inclusive a brasileira.
Na segunda, verá também a tradução em pt-pt para essa patente da Marinha imediatamente no primeiro "link" em formato PDF.

Com certeza, é um termo militar antigo.
No Brasil o Primeiro Sargento, quando promovido, passa a ser Suboficial ou subtenente, o mais graduados dos praças.
O Suboficial é o Marter Chief Officer Petty.
Isso é o que consta dos Manuais de Marinha de Guerra para fins de formalidades, saudaçõoes, alojamentos, prisão, refeições, etc etc.
