Em Inglês juridico, se diferencia entre o ato de ameaçar ou começar o ataque (levantar a mão, punho, faca, etc. ), que chamamos de "assault", do toque de fato na pessoa do outro que seria o "battery".

Literalmente, portanto, o ilustre colega José, tem toda razão em chamar isso de "agressão e espancamento".

Porém, esta não é a forma usada nos tribunais Brasileiros, pois entendem que assalto inclue a tentativa de assalto e que a tentativa sozinho seria "ameaça" e seria um crime separado.

Traduziria, portanto, "Assault and Battery" como "Assalto"

Concordo com a definição do inglês jurídico de Theodore, mas não com a sua tradução. Assalto (no português europeu) é "um ataque repentino", que normalmente tem como finalidade roubar.
