This sentence, as it is, is incomplete, so I can only guess. It would be necessary to know what comes before that. Is it "The doctor"? Is this the beginning of the sentence or a clause in it? Birth should be translated as parto (labour), in my opinion, because this is the way it is referred to in the context of labour.
