API é o Instituto de Petróleo Americano. Estabelece os níveis de qualidade para os lubrificantes de motores de veículos automóveis, orientados fundamentalmente para fabricantes norte-americanos. Os níveis de qualidade identificam-se com duas letras. Os que começam por S, destinam-se a veículos a gasolina, quando começam por C, referem-se a veículos comerciais diesel. A segunda letra depois de S ou C indica o nível de qualidade, em ordem alfabética, sendo por exemplo API SJ o nível máximo de qualidade para veículos a gasolina. "
