English term or phrase: Cold Sores

Hi!

I know 'cold sores' is commonly translated as 'herpes labial', but I have a problem here.

During the dialogue I'm translating, the patient says she has 'cold sores' and gets really surprised when the doc says she has 'herpes'.

Any suggestions on how I could work this out?

Here a small extract for you to have an ideia:

- I came in because i have a bunch of cold sores on my mouth.
- Did you notice your lips tingling at all before you first noticed a cold sore?
- Yes, and someone told me that if you squeeze the puss out.
- Looks like you irritated the sores. Cold sores tend to clear up in ten to fourteen days on their own. Most people will have an experience with cold sores or herpes simplex by the age of twenty.
- Do I have herpes?
