Casts made of synthetic materials are being used more than plaster because they are lightweight, stronger, relatively water-proof, and provide for early weight bearing. The synthetic casting materials (thermolabile plastic, thermoplastic resins, polyurethane, and fiberglass) are activated by submersion in cool or tepid water. Then they are molded to fit the torso or extremity.

Explanation:
A minha filha usou uma depois de tirar o gesso, quando partiu a perna. Feita por medida, segundo as indicaçoes medicas, podia ser retirada quando se vai tomar banho pois abria e fechava, sendo fixada por umas correias de velcro e nao pesava tanto como o gesso pois era feita de uma resina sintetica.
