Gibbons e Tehan (2006), em seu livro texto, caracterizaram clinicamente a DS com o epônimo START (S = Symptoms, T = Tenderness, A = Asymetry, R = Range of Motion, T = Texture). Os sintomas (S) são analisados pela história e pesquisados pela palpação e testes específicos, a hiperalgesia (T) é pesquisada pela palpação, a assimetria (A) e as amplitudes articulares (R) são pesquisadas através de inspeção, palpações estáticas e dinâmicas e testes específicos, e a textura (T) é pesquisada pela palpação dos diferentes tecidos envolvidos (GREENMAN, 2001; GIBBONS e TEHAN, 2006).
