Boa sorte, Rita |

parina chica / puna flamingo ??? Explanation: 1.James's Flamingo. Phoenicoparrus jamesi. Argentina 2.A close look at the waterline (where the mud has washed off) reveals the red legs characteristic of this Phoenicoparrus jamesi, (common names: James' flamingo, Puna flamingo, parina chica) which was encountered in breeding plumage at the Ramsar site in extreme northern Chile. Travelers to the altiplano often comment on the amazing (and wonderful) sight of these flamingos at 4,500 meters above sea level. These are some data found, including the Latin name (basis for any search) - however, it's very difficult to locate Portuguese translations in scientific fields such as botany, zoology, etc. 'Flamingo James' may be OK, but there may be a local name given to the bird long before Mr/Mrs/Ms James arrived on the scene! But I've scrolled through lots of pages and been unable to locate any leads. And in fact, in NO Portuguese page did I find 'flamingo James' as is. Moreover, the Englishness of both james and flamingo complicate matters more. The above are Spanish/English local names. It was impossible to find a Portuguese local name (for Brazil for example). 'Puna' is an area of Chile, so perhaps 'flamingo puna'? |
