Many states provide for the appointment of local truancy officers who have the authority to arrest habitually truant youths and bring them to their parents or to the school they are supposed to attend. It is an office which, where it exists, is often held by a person also a constable or sheriff.

However, the position of a full-time truancy officer is generally viewed as being a relic from the 19th century when mandatory school attendance was relatively new. Truancy regulations today are generally enforced by school officials under the context of parental responsibility.

Reference: Truant officer

Reference information:
If a child is absent from public school for an unexcused or non-exempt reason, he or she is a truant, and notice to that effect is given by his or her teacher or principal to the superintendent or the school directors and to the truant officer.
When the truant officer is notified by the superintendent or the school board of a truancy, he or she must then send a notice to that effect to the child’s parents or guardians. If there is no response from that source, the truant officer will enter a complaint against the parent/guardian to the town grand juror or to the state’s attorney of the county for prosecution.
