Sobre \"muscular Christianity\", eu a traduziria como \"cristandade musculosa\".
Do Oxford:
muscular Christianity: A term applied (from about 1857) to the ideal of religious character exhibited in the writings of Charles Kingsley. (See quot. 1858.)
1858 Edin. Rev. Jan. CVII. 190 It is a school of which Mr. Kingsley is the ablest doctor; and its doctrine has been described fairly and cleverly as ‘muscular Christianity’. The principal characteristics of the writer whose works earned this burlesque though expressive description, are his deep sense of the sacredness of all the ordinary relations and the common duties of life, and the vigour with which he contends..for the great importance and value of animal spirits, physcial strength, and a hearty enjoyment of all the pursuits and accomplishments which are connected with them. |

| at barely over five feet in an age of darwinism Com pouco mais de metro e meio de altura numa era de Darwinismo, [...]
JM Barrie was a bit odd - you only have to take a look at his early life (brother's death/dressing in his brother's clothes etc. to see why). To all that was added the fact that he wasn't very tall (="At barely over five feet") and this made him feel inferior (="he always looked upon himself as a physical and social failure") because he lived in the Victorian age. The Victorian age produced Darwin who wrote about the origin of species and said that all living creatures (including human beings) were the result of evolution (the survival of the fittest). So, Barrie, being so short, felt he didn't belong. The Victorian age was also the age in which the British Empire expanded to be the largest of modern times, and Christianity was strong and powerful (="muscular") sending missionaries out to every corner of the world thus becoming more and more powerful.
So, the author of this essay is suggesting that the fact that Barrie lived in an age when everything was about being fit, strong, more powerful, bigger, only made his short stature seem even more inadequate and that that is why his later journalism is full of essays and articles dealing with manliness and social relationships between men.
Merrion-Webster
ho·mo·so·cial
Function: adjective
: of, relating to, or involving social relationships between persons of the same sex and especially between men
I hope this helps you understand the whole sentence.
