The Latin name is a first step. Such flora&fauna names are notoriously difficult to obtain in Portuguese, and probably hasn't been translted since it's a North American snake.

The Germans also use the term 'Thamnophen' to refer to 'Garter snakes'. Note that the Germans have translated it literally (rot = red & rotseitige = red-sided,strumpfband = garter, natter = snake, adder, viper)
THE FOLLOWING ARE 'DESCRIPTIONS? THSAT MIGHT HELP YOU TRANSLATE
1.Harmless snake of the genus Thamnophis, abundant from Canada to Central America. There are many common species; members of most species are about 2 ft (60 cm) long. Most garter snakes are striped or banded lengthwise, and some are spotted between the stripes
2.Varying according to species, garters are generally striped against a plain or checkered background color. Often delicately or subtly colored, even those with vivid red or yellow stripes or yellow ventral scales are quick to blend in with their background in the wild.
3...sirtalis = like garter, in reference to the snakes similarity to men's black garters
4. Enter the Latin name or the common name in Google and you'll get pages with pictures
I suspect they may be popular as pets so you could ask a pet shop, as a last resort!
My dictionary doesn't translate 'garter' in it's old meaning so I can't help you further.

1 day6 hrs | serpente jarreteira de flancos vermelhos
Explanation: Manuel
I found out that 'garter' can also be 'jarreteira' in Portuguese, so following the french analogy, you could safely translate this as 'serpente jarreteira' as long as you included the Latin term in brackets.
