Capesize: Graneleiros de grande porte contendo mais de 100.000 toneladas de porte bruto. Por esse motivo, só um número restrito de portos no mundo permitem o acesso destes navios.

Os tipos de navio seguem a classificação adoptada pelo Lloyd's Register.

Relativamente aos porta-contentores, a capacidade de transporte é expressa em TEU (unidade equivalente a vinte pés); os navios cuja capacidade é superior a 5000 TEU inserem-se na categoria dos chamados porta-contentores Post-Panamax.

Por navio de GNL entende-se um navio-tanque para o transporte de gás natural liquefeito.

ULCC significa Ultra Large Crude oil Carrier (petroleiro gigante),

VLCC significa Very Large Crude oil Carrier (superpetroleiro).

Os termos Aframax, Suezmax, Panamax e Capesize referem-se a determinadas dimensões e características de, respectivamente, navios-tanque e graneleiros.
