English term or phrase: trace mineral
PT-BR

In an article about horses and how lower or higher temperature may affect their bodies and play a big part in calories intake.

"I suggest using a calcium-phosphorus-trace mineral-salt mixture and adding approximately 4 ounces per day to the grain mix or for horses maintained on pasture keeping this product available free choice year-round."

Oligo-elemento (s)
Explanation:
Micromineral

Microminerals (also known as trace elements) are micronutrients that are chemical elements. They include boron, chromium, cobalt, copper, fluorine, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, silicon, tin, vanadium, and zinc. They are dietary minerals needed by the human body in very small quantities (generally less than 100mg per day) as opposed to macrominerals which are required in larger quantities. Note that the use of the term "mineral" in this context is to be distinguished from the definition commonly used in the geological sciences.

Thanks, Luís! Next time I'll definitely use the "definition:" option offered by Google. It does offer great explanations that can really help translators when deciding on the most suitable word to use.

agree  Robert Tucker: Not sure "mineral" needs distinguishing from its use in geological sciences though.

mineral traço

Explanation:
Also: pouco elemento

The sentence should read or be read as:

“I suggest using calcium plus phosphorus plus trace minerals in/with salt mixture ... “

Calcium and phosphorus are often termed macrominerals because relatively large quantities of them are required (humans may require up to a gram or more per day). Similarly “large” quantities of phosphorus are required – as far as humans are concerned Western diets do not tend to be lacking in it, so supplementation is unusual.

Trace minerals are those that we require in much smaller amounts, e.g iron and zinc (10-15 milligrams for humans), selenium (humans - 50-200 micrograms), chromium, copper, iodine etc etc

A salt bock is often to be found in a horse's manger, of course, from which the horse may well consume a few grams or more per day.

Here a complete mixture is being described to be added to the feed.

sais minerais

Explanation:
