Em algumas espécies diurnas estes ocelos localizam-se no final das asas posteriores como acontece na Cauda-de-andorinha (Papilio machaon) e na Flâmula (Iphiclides podalirius). Estes falsos olhos caudais, que instintivamente se movem de forma regular, confundem um eventual predador, que, ao atacar os ocelos, ficará apenas com pedaços da asa e algumas escamas, enquanto a borboleta conseguirá eventualmente fugir.
