One day in 1948, when Swiss amateur mountaineer George de Mestral arrived home from walking his dog through a field, he noticed burrs clinging to his clothes and the dog’s fur. Studying a burr under his microscope, he realized that tiny hooks made the seedpod stick to the loops in his pants fabric. This gave him the idea of developing a two-part nylon fastener, one part made up of burrlike hooks and the other part composed of soft loops. Combining the words velour and crochet, he called his invention Velcro. It stuck.

Oi Gouveia! Com relação à questão vagem x carrapicho, minha impressão é que vagem não necessáriamente seja uma coisa que prenda em tecidos ou pelo de animais. Já com o termo carrapicho a associação é imediata e mais clara.

Asker: Oi, Salvador! Vc tem razão. Trata-se da história do velcro. Mas o que me deixou confusa foi a palavra SEEDPOD. Eu tb havia entendido que era o carrapicho que se prendia aos fios do tecido da calça do alpinista. Mas quando li SEEDPOD, fiquei confusa. Por isso, pedi ajuda. Vagem? Carrapicho?
