Atunci cand au primit vestea neplacuta, astronautii asteptau comanda de revenire. Initial, centrul de control de la Houston, Texas, le-a spus sa mai inconjoare o data Pamantul, dar s-au pierdut doua "ferestre" de aterizare la Centrul Spatial Kennedy al NASA. Urmatoarea posibilitate de reintrare in atmosfera terestra a fost programata pentru astazi, iar locul revenirii urmeaza sa fie stabilit in functie de conditiile meteorologice.
