Flintworkers first trimmed a suitable
piece of flint into a core tool by
striking it with a stone hammer, such
as a quartzite pebble. The tool was
then roughly the right shape to be
worked into a handaxe.
Flake tool
The flintworkers learned to
predict how the stone would
break when sharply hit with the
stone hammer. They then sliced
off long flakes from the
underside of the core tool. This
gave the axe a sharp, strong
