English term or phrase: United Kingdom
Need help because Im trying to get United Kingdom translated into diferent languages.
Thank you
Yvonne
Marea Britanie
Explanation:
Although it's not the same thing, I don't think you will ever hear someone in Romania saying Regatul Unit.
You might hear Regatul Unit al Marii Britanii, but the most common form is Marea Britanie.
So depending on the audience of your text, you might want to consider leaving the more restrictive version which, however, would rather be understood by the general public.
Otherwise, if you have to be precise, go with the first answer, but you should definitely include the bit in the parantheses.
Regatul Unit would not bear any significance for a Romanian readeship, in my opinion.

agree  Anca Nitu: Regatul Unit pur si simplu ca daca zici de Marea Britanie trebuie sa zici si de Irlanda de Nord si e cam tgd

neutral  Oana Popescu: The complete form is "Regatul Unit al Marii Britanii si Irlandei de Nord"; to be used in official documents. If you just need the common form, used in daily conversation, "Marea Britanie" should be enough, as Elvira sugested.

neutral  Anca Nitu: The thing is that Yvonne wants to translate "United Kingdom" in different languages not "Great Britain" . And the Romanian audience is familar enough with "Regatul Unit" is has a somewhat snobbish quality in Romanian but Yvonne wants to translate "UK".

-> Sorry, but the Romanian audience does not think of anything (or it has to think a lot) of Regatul Unit. Maybe you've been away too long from Romania

agree  corin: As Eli said, if you want the word-by-word translation, go with the first answer; if you want the most commonly used form in Romania, go with the second one.
