(1) Operatiune de schimb caracterizata prin cumpararea sau vanzarea unei monede straine si vanzarea sa simultana la termen (sau invers), operatiune executata in general pentru micsorarea pierderilor de schimb. (2) Credite incrucisate. Operatiune efectuata, mai ales, intre banci centrale si constand in acordarea unui imprumut unei banci intr-o moneda si, simultan, efectuarea unei plati pentru aceeasi suma si la aceeasi scadenta, dar in alta moneda. Acest gen de operatiune se efectueaza deseori in relatiile cu FMI sau BRI, pentru a se depasi un impas in situatia lichiditatilor internationale. (3) Operatiunile Swap la sfarsit de luna sunt operatiuni efectuate de Banca Nationala cu celelalte banci pentru a le furniza lichiditatile indispensabile respectarii scadentei lunare. Din aceeasi operatiune, dar in sens invers, rezulta o "infuzie" de lichiditati. Asadar, este vorba de un instrument important de politica monetara. (4) De asemenea, se poate vorbi de operatiuni Swap asupra devizelor, asupra ratei dobanzii, etc., toate operatiunile suprapunandu-se aceluiasi principiu. (5) Operatiunile Swap de datorii, adica cesiune temporara sau conversie a datoriilor in actiuni sau alte titluri de participare.

"În practica valutară se face distincţie între operaţiuni swap FX (swap forex) şi operaţiuni swap cu valute. Swap-ul FX presupune tranzacţionarea aceleiaşi sume de valută (cumpărare, respectiv vânzare) la ambele date ale tranzacţiei, fără a implica şi efectuarea unor anumite plăţi în contul unor dobânzi aferente perioadei cuprinse între cele două momente (ca în cazul swap-lui cu valute)."
