Sliding joints, which occur where two bones with flat surfaces slide on each other. Their movement is restricted by a number of ligaments. Sliding joints permit side-to-side and back-and-forth movement. Examples include those between the ribs and thoracic vertebrate, between the carpels and between the tarsals.
