Microscopia electronică bazată pe transmisia de electroni este o metodă de determinare a dimensiunii cristalelor și de investigare a acestora (nanocristale, în special).
TEM a fost realizat pentru prima oară în anul 1930 și prezintă o rezoluție mult mai bună în raport cu cea oferită de microscopia optică. În urma bombardării suprafeței materialului cu un fascicul de electroni sunt produse mai multe tipuri de alte fascicule. Fasciculele generate furnizează informații pretioase, uneori complementare, despre material. Obținerea în TEM a imaginilor în câmp luminos și în câmp întunecat se completează una pe alta și permite analizarea microstructurii obiectului studiat.
Dungile alternativ luminoase (maxim) și întunecoase (minim) care apar în urma fenomenului de interferență luminoasă se numesc franje. Prin suprapunere, aceste franje formează o rețea.
