**Modus operandi** ("often used in the abbreviated forms M.O. or simply Method) is a Latin phrase, approximately translated as "mode of operation".[1] The plural is modi operandi ("modes of operation"). It is used in law enforcement to describe a criminal's characteristic patterns and style of committing crimes.[2] It is also applied in fraud investigation when talking about behavior patterns that indicate specific types of fraud, e.g., "False identity is a key MO of retail banking sleeper fraud".

Modus operandi (MO) est une phrase latine, traduite approximativement par « mode d'opération ». Le pluriel est modi operandi (« modes d'opération »). Cette expression est utilisée dans le contexte policier pour décrire un mode de fonctionnement typique d'un criminel et ses façons d'agir.

Un modus operandi peut être utilisé pour conduire une enquête dans un groupe de criminels. Par exemple, un voleur peut habituellement entrer par une fenêtre à l'arrière d'un domicile, en la brisant avec une pierre. Si un criminel reconnnu est supecté d'avoir commis un cambriolage, on peut alors comparer les modi operandi pour aider à l'identification du coupable.

Le modus operandi d'un criminel peut aussi être utilisé dans le profiling, pour aider à déterminer des indices concernant la psychologie du coupable.

La méthode d'opération est souvent confondue avec la « signature » d'un criminel. Alors que la méthode d'opération peut changer avec le temps, sa signature restera habituellement la même.
